Why These Milky Way Chocolate Chip Cookies Are a Must-Bake

The story of these exceptional cookies began as a clever post-Halloween tradition. Faced with an abundance of trick-or-treating candy, I sought a creative way to transform the surplus into something new and exciting. Inspired by my friend Danielle’s incredible chocolate chip cookies laden with Snickers chunks, I set out to create a Milky Way adaptation, specifically catering to my nut-avoiding family members. The results were nothing short of spectacular. My family was absolutely delighted, only to be momentarily annoyed when my husband, Tom, whisked away half the batch to share with his friends. The demand was clear: these candy bar cookies were an instant hit!

Fast forward seven years, and the longing for these unique cookies resurfaced. My daughter, with her impressively sharp memory for delicious treats, vividly recalled how much she adored that inaugural batch. It’s funny how some flavors imprint themselves so deeply, especially when I can barely remember what I had for breakfast most days! Deciding it was time to rekindle that culinary joy, I baked them once more, and predictably, they were a colossal success all over again. The magic of these cookies truly endures.

Here are just a few compelling reasons why you absolutely need to add these incredible candy bar cookies to your baking repertoire:

  • Unforgettably Delicious: They are, without a doubt, darn tasty! The blend of classic chocolate chip cookie dough with the unique nougat and caramel of a Milky Way creates an explosion of flavor and a wonderfully chewy texture that’s simply irresistible.
  • Smart Candy Solution: Perfectly designed for repurposing leftover Halloween candy. While Milky Ways are the star here, this recipe is incredibly versatile and works beautifully with other candy bars like Snickers (just be mindful of nuts if there are allergies!). It’s a fantastic way to extend the holiday fun.
  • Freezer-Friendly Indulgence: Leftovers, if you manage to have any, freeze exceptionally well. This means you can easily store a batch for a future craving, ensuring a delightful indulgence is always within reach. Simply thaw and enjoy for a quick, homemade treat.

Expert Tips for Crafting Perfect Homemade Chocolate Chip Cookies with a Milky Way Twist

Having dedicated decades to perfecting the art of the standard chocolate chip cookie, I’ve accumulated a wealth of knowledge. A few fundamental guidelines will consistently lead you to a perfect batch every single time. When it comes to incorporating the delectable Milky Way chunks, there are a couple of additional, crucial tips to keep in mind, all meticulously detailed below to ensure your success and elevate your baking game.

  • Embrace Quality Ingredients: Always opt for real, unsalted butter, large eggs, and genuine vanilla extract. These foundational ingredients are the backbone of any exceptional cookie. Margarine and artificial vanilla simply cannot replicate the rich flavor and desirable texture that real ingredients impart, making a noticeable difference in the final product.
  • Room Temperature is Key: Ensure both your butter and eggs are at room temperature before you begin mixing. This seemingly minor step is critical for achieving a smooth, homogenous dough. Room temperature butter creams more effectively with sugar, incorporating air for a lighter texture, while room temperature eggs emulsify better into the mixture, preventing a curdled appearance and ensuring even distribution.
  • Pre-freeze Your Candy: This is a game-changer for candy bar cookies! Freezing the chopped Milky Way pieces for at least 30 minutes before mixing them into the dough helps significantly minimize the oozing of caramel during baking. While some caramel will still inevitably melt and create wonderful gooey pockets (which is part of their charm!), freezing helps maintain more distinct candy chunks. Rest assured, whether they ooze a little or a lot, they will taste absolutely amazing!
  • Baking Soda and Baking Powder Synergy: This recipe thoughtfully calls for both baking soda and baking powder, each playing a distinct role in leavening and texture. Baking soda, activated by acidic ingredients like brown sugar, contributes to spread and browning, while baking powder provides lift and tenderness. PRO-Tip: Many home bakers often use much less baking powder than baking soda, and as a result, baking powder frequently expires while sitting in the pantry. Always check the expiration date on both leavening agents. If there’s any doubt about its freshness, it’s best to replace it to guarantee your cookies rise properly.
  • Achieve Uniformity with a Scoop: For consistently sized and perfectly baked cookies, invest in a cookie scoop (also known as a cookie disher). Using a scoop ensures each cookie is the same size, promoting even baking across the entire batch. This means no more over-baked small cookies or under-baked large ones!
  • Taming the Caramel Ooze: Due to the luscious, melting caramel within the Milky Way chunks, some cookies might experience a bit of overflow during baking. PRO-Tip: When your pan of freshly baked cookies comes out of the oven, act quickly. While the cookies are still warm and pliable, use a sharp knife to gently cut and separate any excess caramel that has oozed and spread, moving it away from the cookie edges. This simple technique not only helps maintain a neater appearance but also makes removing the cookies from the baking sheet much easier once they cool.
  • Reshaping Imperfect Circles: Because of the gooey, oozing caramel, some of these delightful cookies may bake into more organic, amoeba-like shapes rather than perfect circles. Don’t fret! PRO-Tip: One of my favorite tricks for achieving beautifully round cookies is to use a spatula sprayed with cooking spray (like Pam). Immediately after pulling the hot cookies out of the oven, gently tap and nudge their edges with the greased spatula to coax them back into more spherical shapes. Normally, cooking spray isn’t necessary for this trick, but with the sticky caramel involved, it truly makes a difference and prevents sticking.
  • Effortless Release and Cleanup: Lining your baking sheets with parchment paper is a non-negotiable step for these cookies. This prevents the cookies, especially those with oozing caramel, from sticking to the pan, ensuring they release easily and intact after baking. As an added bonus, parchment paper makes cleanup an absolute breeze, saving you time and effort.
  • Storage and Longevity: These delectable cookies will maintain their freshness and chewiness when stored at room temperature in a sealed, airtight container for 3-4 days. For longer storage, they freeze exceptionally well for up to 3 months. Simply thaw them at room temperature when a craving strikes.

Sink your teeth into these incredibly chewy chocolate chip cookies, generously studded with luscious chunks of Milky Way candy bars!

Ingredients

  • 1 cup unsalted butter, softened to room temperature
  • 3/4 cup light brown sugar, packed
  • 1/4 cup dark brown sugar, packed
  • 1/2 cup granulated sugar
  • 2 large eggs, at room temperature
  • 1 tablespoon pure vanilla extract
  • 2 3/4 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1/2 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 12 ounces mini semi-sweet chocolate chips (or regular chocolate chips)
  • 8 Fun-size Milky Way candy bars, chopped into bite-sized pieces, then frozen

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 350ºF (175ºC). Line baking sheets with parchment paper for easy release and cleanup.
  2. In a large bowl, using an electric mixer, cream together the softened butter and both brown and granulated sugars until light and fluffy. Beat in the eggs one at a time, then stir in the vanilla extract until well combined.
  3. In a separate bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, baking soda, and salt. Gradually add the dry ingredients to the wet ingredients, mixing on low speed until just combined. Be careful not to overmix. Gently fold in all the chocolate chips and the frozen chopped Milky Way candy bars.
  4. Drop rounded tablespoons of dough onto the prepared baking sheets, spacing them about 2 inches apart. Bake for 8-10 minutes, or until the edges are golden brown and the centers are still slightly soft. If some caramel has oozed out, use a sharp knife to gently scrape the excess away from the cookie while they are still warm, before they cool completely. Let cool on the baking sheet for a few minutes before transferring to a wire rack to cool completely.

Notes

Total time indicated does not include any freezing time for the candy or cooling times for the baked cookies. For best results, allow enough time for these steps.

If you don’t have dark brown sugar on hand, you can easily create your own by combining 1 cup of light brown sugar with 1 tablespoon of molasses. This will give you a similar rich flavor and moisture. Store any leftover molasses for future baking projects.

Should your cookies emerge from the oven in slightly irregular shapes due to the melting caramel, don’t worry! While they are still hot, use a spatula lightly greased with cooking spray to gently tap and push the edges into more perfectly round forms.
